Talk by Thomas Obitz in the Informatik-Kolloquium series

Thomas Obitz, Principal Architect, Infosys Technologies Ltd.
"Performance Engineering - A Practical Case"

Monday 21.01.2008, 10:00
Room S2 02 / B002 (Robert-Piloty-Building)

Slides available for download!

Abstract:

Just a simple requirement: Build a system which stores all trades and quotes from all stock exchanges around the world, writes them into a relational database, and makes them available for analysis within a maximum of 10 seconds.
Funny idea? Well, it was the idea of an important client of Infosys, who was willing to fund this project. And so, the idea started to materialize...

Thomas Obitz will explain how his team approached the given challenge and describes the Influx Performance Engineering methodology - built around queuing models -, and how it was used to construct a system of predictable, high performance. This includes the various approaches used for optimizing both resource utilization and scalability. Come gain fresh perspectives and new insights on performance engineering methodologies.

DVS changes DNS-domain-name and server certificates

Starting from Dec, 5th 8:00am CET, the domain name of DVS is renamed to dvs.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de (the part "dvs1" is renamed to "dvs").
This means, all hosts are renamed! If you need to login to DVS, you need to use login.dvs.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de instead of login.dvs1.... Your mail can be fetched at mail.dvs.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de!

E-Mails are still delivered to the dvs1-domain, but please update your adressbook and use the new addresses!

Alongside renaming the domain, all server certificates are renewed and signed by a new certificate authority. Users of Internet Explorer and Opera don't need to install CA-certificates anymore since their browsers already contain everything that is needed to verfiy our sites. Users of Mozilla-Browsers (Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird etc.) or other Software can obtain the new CA certificates here.

Two new DVS group members

We would like to welcome two new members to our group. Bettina Kemme and Ilia Petrov joined DVS in October.

Prof. Bettina Kemme is associate professor at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. She did her undergraduate at the University of Erlangen and her PhD at the ETH Zürich. She has joined DVS for the academic year 2007/2008 as part of her sabbatical.
Her research interests lie in the intersection of database systems and distributed systems. Current projects investigate adaptability features of component-based information systems, scalability and fault-tolerance of massively multiplayer online games, and application aware P2P protocols.

Ilia Petrov joins DVS as a post-doctoral researcher. Ilia received his PhD and MSc degrees from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. His research focus is on information and data management system in distributed systems with emphasis on metadata.

SPECjms2007 released

The Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC) released SPECjms2007 on October 26, a new benchmark that measures the performance of enterprise message-oriented middleware servers. The benchmark uses the JMS (Java Message Service) standard interface supported by all major enterprise messaging vendors.

SPECjms2007 was developed by SPEC's Java subcommittee under supervision of Samuel Kounev (project manager) and Kai Sachs (lead developer) from the DVS group.

For more infos see our press release (in german, PDF) and www.spec.org/jms2007

Talk by Prof. K. Mani Chandy in the Informatik-Kolloquium series

Prof. K. Mani Chandy (California Institute of Technology)
"The Fundamental Question in Distributed Systems Research"

Friday 11.05.2007, 16:15
Room S2 02 C120 (Robert-Piloty-Building)

Abstract:

The fundamental question is: What actions based on local information guarantee desired global behavior?
Examples of distributed systems include ants building colonies, teams of robots rescuing people and first responders dealing with disasters. Consider robots building a structure in a hostile environment; each robot does not know whether other robots exist, nor does it know the global state of the environment. Further, the environments state may change due to natural causes such as levees breaking or due to hostile acts by adversaries. What structures can be built by each agent making local decisions without awareness of what other agents (if any) are doing? What structures cannot be built this way?
What problems can be solved when dynamics of agents are specified by differential equations and communication between agents is by continuous analog signals, or when agents take discrete actions and communication is through messages?
What algorithms are superior in static environments? What algorithms are better for rapidly evolving situations? What is the quantitative benefit of one kind of environment over another? What has been proved so far and what is conjecture?
This talk discusses questions, some answers, and suggests open problems for collaborative research across fields of information science and technology.

Talk by Prof. Buchmann in the Informatik-Kolloquium series

"Managing the data glut: The convergence of RFID,WSN, P2P and Pub/Sub"

Thursday 26.04.2007, 16:00
Room S2 02 C110 (Robert-Piloty-Building)

Abstract:

As the physical and digital worlds converge (e.g. through RFID tags on every object or through billions of deployed sensors) the flood of data and events that must be tracked, filtered and processed will threaten to drown us. Other emerging technologies for handling enormous volumes of data are Peer-to-Peer systems (best known from file-sharing systems) and Publish/Subscribe systems used for efficient notification and information dissemination. In this talk we look at solutions proposed by the different communities and look at the convergence of these technologies and where they can benefit each other or how they can be combined.

Apply for the new Research Training Group!

DFG has awarded TU Darmstadt a Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg) on "Cooperative, Adaptive and Responsive Monitoring in Mixed Mode Systems" (GKMM) starting Oct. 1, 2006, and with a dedicated international component. This is a joint initiative across multiple departments at TUD (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and also involves Virginia Tech in the US.

The overall goal of the Graduate Training Group is to explore fundamental issues of data acquisition, distribution, management and cooperative utilization in task oriented mixed mode environments.

For this GKMM, the Databases and Distributed Systems Group is soliciting applications for 2 PhD positions/scholarships covering the thematic areas of:

  • Middleware for mixed mode systems
  • Data management in mixed mode systems

Please direct your complete electronic application (including full transcripts of records) to Prof. Alejandro Buchmann. Please include always Marion Braun in the cc.
